Vastu for the Master Bedroom

The Southwest direction holds a specific place in traditional Vastu Shastra as the recommended location for the master bedroom, particularly for the head of the household. The reasoning given is one of stability and grounding — Southwest is traditionally associated with the earth element and considered the most stable zone of a home, a quality thought to translate into steadier rest and steadier decision-making for whoever occupies that room.

South and West are commonly cited as acceptable alternatives when Southwest genuinely isn't available in the layout, while Northwest is often suggested specifically for guest bedrooms or younger family members rather than the primary bedroom. Northeast, by contrast, is one of the more consistently discouraged directions for any bedroom — that zone is traditionally reserved for prayer and meditation, and placing a bed there is thought to work against both functions.

Beyond the room's direction, traditional guidance extends into the layout within it: the bed positioned so the sleeper's head points South or East while sleeping, mirrors avoided directly opposite the bed, and the room kept free of clutter beneath the bed itself. These details are treated as secondary to the room's overall direction, but they're raised often enough in consultations to be worth knowing before furniture is placed.

As with every placement discussed here, this reflects general traditional guidance rather than a fixed verdict — a full consultation accounts for the specific structure, and for constraints a single room's compass direction can't capture on its own.
