Vastu for the Main Door — Which Direction Is Right?

Of every question raised in a Vastu consultation, the direction of the main entrance comes up first more often than any other — understandably, since it's usually the one element of a floor plan that's already fixed by the time anyone starts asking. Traditional Vastu Shastra treats North, East, and Northeast as the most favourable directions for a home's main entrance, with Northeast in particular regarded as the single most auspicious placement of all.

The reasoning given in traditional texts ties each direction to a different quality of entering energy — North associated with wealth, East with the rising sun and new beginnings, Northeast considered the meeting point of both. Southwest, by contrast, is traditionally held to be the least favourable direction for an entrance, along with South and Southeast, which are more commonly recommended for other functions entirely.

In practice, very few plots offer a free choice of entrance direction — the road, the neighbouring structures, and the shape of the site itself usually decide it long before Vastu enters the conversation. Where the ideal direction genuinely isn't available, traditional guidance offers secondary remedies: adjustments to the threshold, the placement of the door within its wall, and specific design elements meant to soften a less favourable orientation.

This is general traditional guidance, not a substitute for a site-specific consultation — a qualified Vastu expert accounts for plot shape, surrounding structures, and details a five-minute read never could.
